Troubleshooting Guide

Pump:

Pump Will Not Prime

Possible Cause

  1. No water in strainer
  2. Strainer pot lid is not tight
  3. Damaged lid o-ring
  4. Water level is below skimmer
  5. Strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged
  6. Closed valve in piping system
  7. Pump is on low speed (two-speed units only)
  8. Air leak in suction line

Low Flow — High Filter Pressure

Possible Cause

  1. Filter is dirty
  2. Restriction in return line
  3. Bad pressure gauge

Low Flow — Low Filter Pressure

Possible Cause

  1. Strainer basket or skimmer basket is clogged
  2. Clogged pump impeller
  3. Air leak in suction line
  4. Restriction in suction line
  5. Bad pressure gauge

Motor Does Not Turn

Possible Cause

  1. Power switch is off
  2. Circuit breaker is tripped
  3. Pump is in “off” mode of a timer controlled circuit
  4. Motor terminal connections are incorrect
  5. Motor shaft is locked by bad bearing
  6. Impeller is locked by debris

Water:

Cloudy Water

Possible Cause

(In order of most likely potential Cause)

Cause Solution
Filtration Increase filtration. Filter a cloudy pool continuously until crystal clear. Pool should be filtered 12hrs/day.
Dirty filter Clean filter with filter cleaner.
High pH Lower pH to between 7.4 – 7.6
Low Free Chlorine Superchlorinate pool with chlorine shock to raise chlorine to 10ppm. Maintain chlorine at no lower than 5ppm until water is crystal clear. Run filter continuously until crystal clear.
Contaminants passing filter media Use a dry or liquid clarifier to bind small particles together, making them larger for the filter media to trap.
High Calcium Hardness (600ppm or greater) Dilution is necessary. Drain 1/2 of pool water and refill. Take water sample to professional dealer to determine if repeat dilution is necessary.

Green Water

Symptom Cause Solution
Green green Green algae Shock Treat Pool. Use Algaecide to kill existing algae and prevent further growth
Clear green Copper Use metal removing chemical to control staining. Check for low pH and add pH plus if needed

Reddish-Brown Water

Cause Solution
Iron or Manganese Use metal removing chemical to control staining. Add clarifier to enhance filtering capabilities. For severe conditions, use a flocking agent to remove iron.

Black Spots

Cause Solution
Black algae Use algaecide, Chlorinate heavily with shock. Brush spots twice daily until they disappear.

Skin and Eye Irritation

Cause Solution
Combined chlorine level too high Shock treat to remove organic wastes.
pH too high or too low Test pH and adjust with pH Plus Or pH Minus as needed.

Water Balancing Guide

Balance Check List Level
Chlorine 3.0 – 4.0 PPM
Bromine 2.0 – 4.0 PPM
Stabilizer 40 PPM
pH 7.4 -7.6 (Vinyl 7.6)
Total Alkalinity (TA) Vinyl, fiberglass, painted plaster 80 – 150 PPM
Calcium Hardness Vinyl, fiberglass, painted plaster 200 – 400 PPM
Metals (Iron, copper, manganese) None
Total Disolved Solids (TDS) 1000-2000 PPM
